Being a famous city of historic and cultural significance in China and the birth place of culture and arts in the north of China, Tianjin enjoys a reputation of "cradle of operas" and "motherland of folk art". Thanks to the Tianjin's attention to the protection of intangible culture heritage, 15 items have been chosen in the list of national-level intangible heritage, namely, Beijing Opera, Baodi Pingju Opera, Tianjin Shidiao Art, Jingdong Drum, Yangliuqing Wooden New Year Paintings, Colored Clay Figurine Zhang, Heavy Knife Wushu of Hui Minority, Tianjin Drum, Hangu Flying Fork, Comic Dialogue, Jingrun Drum, Hebei Opera, Pingju Opera, Design and Preparation of Kites Weis and Tianjin Sacrifice Ceremony, etc.

Tianjin is a modern cultural metropolis too. In Tianjin museums and memorials, there are 570,000 pieces of cultural relics, including some rarities deserving the titles of national treasures. In addition, Tianjin is building an Asian ecological culture industrial project in Panlong Valley, Jixian County, with a view to form a culture industry center in the urban circle of Beijing and Tianjin, and even rim Bohai region.At the 29th Olympic Games held in Beijing in 2008, Tianjin, as a co-organizer city of the Beijing, held 12 soccer games at Water Drop, e.g. Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium. 30 Tianjin athletes, Chen Yibing, Tong Wen and Wang Xin as main, won 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. In the China Soccer Premier League held in 2008, Tianjin TEDA Tema was awarded a good score of the 4th, and won the qualification of participating in AFC Champions League, in the final of National Women's Volleyball Tournament of game season 2008-2009, Tianjin Women's Volleyball Team won successfully, which was its 6th championship in the latest seven game seasons. In recent years, the whole city exercise in Tianjin is initiated with colorful activities. The population who participate exercise in Tianjin exceeds 40%, and the physical qualification rate of the citizen is up to 88.7%, both above the national averages.

Science, Technology and Education
Tianjin is the birth place of Tianjin University, the first university in modern Chinese education history. Nankai University, the Alma Mater of Zhou Enlai, first premier of the new China, also locates at Tianjin. Nankai High School, with hundreds years history, has become a pride thanks to its nurturing two premiers of the People Republic of China as well as over 50 academicians of CAS and CAE who are of big significance to China.

Tianjin is speeding up the practice of the strategies of Invigorating Tianjin Through Science and Education as well as Building Tianjin Through Talents. Now, there are 45 institutes of higher learning and 10 independent colleges in Tianjin, with a total of more than 420,000 registered students. The gross rate of students being accepted to institutions of higher learning has reached 55%. Tianjin is the third city to realizing higher education popularization. As the cradle of China vocational education, it's also among the earliest regions in China to provide 9-year compulsory education, and among the top 3 in China in terms of regional education capability.

Year 2008 saw 14 scientific achievements of Tianjin being granted the State Science and Technology Prizes. Tianjin has 33 academicians, including 15 CAS academicians and 18 CAE academicians. In terms of the overall scientific and technological strength, Tianjin enjoys a leading position in China. Tianjin Hi-tech Industry Park, founded in 1988, is one of the first national new and high-tech industrial development zones approved by the State Council of China. For more than a decade, the major economic indicators in the park have undergone sustainable, sound and rapid growth, with an annual rate of over 30%.
